Pairs well with
A cutting has no roots and no way to make food until it grows some, so the first few weeks decide whether it strikes or rots. Clonex Purple is Growth Technology's rooting hormone gel, made in Australia and registered with the APVMA (No. 33350), carrying indole butyric acid (IBA) at 3 g/L. Because it is a gel, it clings to the stem, seals the cut end and holds the hormone where roots form. Purple is the middle of Growth Technology's three strengths, made for semi-hardwood (medium-wood) cuttings, and Growth Technology states it can be used on all types of plants. Available in 50ml, 250ml, 1L, 5L and 20L.
Specifications
Grower's Tip
- Never dip cuttings straight into the bottle. Decant enough for the session into a clean container, use it, and throw out what is left. That is how the gel stays good for two years.
- Use clean, sharp tools and cut at 45 degrees just below a node, as Growth Technology directs. A crushed stem roots slower than a clean cut.
- If cuttings form a callus but no roots, the hormone is too strong for that plant. Growth Technology's answer is a lower strength: Clonex Green (1.5 g/L) for soft, sappy cuttings.
- Keep the jar in the fridge. If it has turned runny in a hot shed, chill it and it thickens back up.
- Cuttings are commonly run under 24 hours of light, but that is plant-specific and some varieties do better with a few hours of dark. Check what suits the plant you are propagating rather than treating any photoperiod as a rule.
- Once the cuttings are in the medium, feed them with Clonex Clone Solution at 5ml per litre until roots establish. That is the second half of the system Growth Technology designed.
How To Use It
Pairs Well With
The other half of the Clonex system. Dip in gel, then feed with CCS at 5ml per litre while roots develop.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Clonex Purple a registered rooting hormone?
Yes. It is registered with the APVMA (No. 33350) and its active constituent is indole butyric acid (IBA) at 3 g/L, both printed on the label.
Which cuttings is Clonex Purple for?
Semi-hardwood, or medium-wood, cuttings. Growth Technology makes three strengths: Green (1.5 g/L IBA) for softwood, Purple (3.0 g/L) for medium wood and Red (8.0 g/L) for hardwood.
Can I use it on houseplant cuttings?
Yes. Growth Technology states it can be used on all types of plants. Choose the strength by how woody the stem is, and if a cutting calluses without rooting, step down a strength.
Can I dip cuttings straight into the bottle?
No. Decant what you need into a clean container and discard the leftover. Dipping into the bottle contaminates the rest of the gel.
Do I need Clonex Clone Solution as well?
No, the gel works on its own, but Growth Technology designed the two to work together: Clonex gel when the cutting is taken, CCS to feed it while roots develop. They are not interchangeable.
How many cuttings will a bottle do?
Growth Technology puts it at several thousand cuttings per litre. The real number depends on how thick the stems are and how deep you dip.
Why has my Clonex gone runny?
Heat. Warm storage makes the gel liquefy. Put it in the fridge and it thickens again.
How long does it last once opened?
Up to two years, according to Growth Technology, provided you decant rather than dip into the bottle and keep it cool, ideally refrigerated.
Do I need gloves?
Not by the label, but the label does say to avoid prolonged skin contact and to wash skin thoroughly if contact occurs. Gloves are the easy way to do that. Keep it out of reach of children.
