Plants build silica into their cell walls, and a stem with stronger walls stands up better to weight, heat and a dry week. Silica is not one of the 12 essential minerals, so a complete base nutrient does not carry it; it comes as a separate additive. GT Silica is Growth Technology's potassium silicate: 1.07% w/v silica (SiO₂) and 0.70% soluble potash (K₂O) in a liquid you stir into plain water before the nutrient goes in. Use it at 5ml per litre in hydro and semi-hydro or 2–3ml per litre in potting mix, at every watering. It is alkaline, so the pH gets checked last. It is a mineral supplement, not a feed and not a pest-control product. Available in 250ml, 1L, 5.5L and 20L.

Silica goes in first. Stir GT Silica into plain water and let it rest 15 minutes before your nutrient goes in, then test the pH last. Growth Technology warns that getting the order wrong can cause pH spikes, cloudiness and nutrients locking out.
Stronger cell walls and stemsPlants deposit silica in their cell walls. Growth Technology formulates GT Silica to strengthen those walls, which is what holds a heavy plant upright.
Better stress toleranceGrowth Technology's label lists increased stress resistance, and its guidance names heat and drought. Firmer cells lose water more slowly.
Hydro, LECA and potting mix5ml per litre in hydro and semi-hydro, 2–3ml per litre in potting mix. One bottle covers a hydro system and a shelf of houseplants.
Made for every wateringGrowth Technology says it can go in at every watering, as part of a consistent feeding schedule. No on-off program to track.
Supports chlorophyll productionGrowth Technology's label lists increased chlorophyll production, aiding photosynthesis and the uptake of available CO₂.
A clear mixing orderThe label spells out the order: Silica, rest, nutrient, rest, pH. Follow it and the mix stays clear and stable.

Grower's Tip

  • Silica first, every time. Potassium silicate is alkaline, and dropped into a mixed nutrient it can spike the pH and cloud the solution. Into plain water, then the nutrient, is the order on the label.
  • Give each stage its 15 minutes. Growth Technology says vigorous mixing with an immediate pH check can get you close, but test thoroughly if you skip the rest.
  • Expect the pH to have climbed once everything is in. Keep pH Down on the bench and adjust to 5.5–6.5 last.
  • Keep it in the routine for the plant's whole life. Silica builds into new growth as it forms, so it works as a standing part of the feed, not a rescue.
  • In potting mix, 250ml at 2.5ml per litre makes 100 litres of water. In hydro, 1L at 5ml per litre makes 200 litres.
  • One cap holds 20ml, so a quarter of a cap in a litre of water is the 5ml hydro rate.
  • Store it somewhere cool and dark, and shake before use.

How To Mix It

1Fill your mixing container with plain water. Shake the bottle and add GT Silica: 5ml per litre for hydro and semi-hydro, or 2–3ml per litre for potting mix.
2Stir vigorously and let it rest for 15 minutes.
3Add your nutrient at its own label rate, stir vigorously and let it rest for another 15 minutes. Any other additives go in now.
4Test the pH and adjust it to 5.5–6.5. Silica is alkaline, so expect to bring it down.
5Water as normal or fill the reservoir. Repeat at every watering.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is GT Silica potassium silicate?

Yes. The label lists silica (SiO₂) 1.07% and soluble potash (K₂O) 0.70% w/v, both derived from potassium silicate.

Do I add Silica before or after the nutrient?

Before. Stir it into plain water, rest 15 minutes, then add the nutrient, rest another 15 minutes, and test the pH last. That is the order on Growth Technology's label.

Will GT Silica raise my pH?

Yes. Potassium silicate is alkaline, so test the pH after everything is mixed and adjust it to 5.5–6.5.

How much do I use?

5ml per litre of water in hydro and semi-hydro, and 2–3ml per litre in potting mix.

Can I use it at every watering?

Yes. Growth Technology says it can be used with every watering as part of a consistent feeding schedule.

Can I use GT Silica on houseplants in potting mix?

Yes. Growth Technology gives a potting mix rate of 2–3ml per litre, and lists semi-hydro at 5ml per litre.

Is GT Silica a pest-control product?

No. It is a mineral supplement for cell-wall strength, not a registered pest-control product. If you have a pest problem, use a product registered for that pest.

Is silica an essential plant nutrient?

No. Growth Technology does not count it among the 12 essential minerals, which is why it comes as a separate additive rather than in a base nutrient.

Which size should I buy?

250ml suits a shelf of houseplants, 1L a tent or a big plant collection, 5.5L a regular hydro mix, and 20L a larger system. 20L drums ship on a flat freight rate.

Welcome to The Grow Guys

We built The Grow Guys from the soil up — well, coco and perlite. Before we sold gear, we bought it, ran it, and learned the hard way what's worth the money and what ends up in the shed. That's the filter everything on our shelves passes through. No sales scripts, no rebadged junk, no telling you what you want to hear. Just gear we'd run ourselves and advice from people who actually grow. Chasing higher yields, tighter flowers, or your first harvest? You're in the right place.
